Writings blogs was a good experience, even though I was a little lazy to start writing them. I think this exercise gave me a new way to express myself and maybe this worked to my classmates too, because we had to write about things that we don’t usually tell everybody. Also, I believe I increase my writings skills, because we have to write about certain topics that we are not familiar in English language. I mean, sometimes difficult words came up and it was hard to express what I thought in English, or when I read my classmate’s blogs I discover new words, or I could inspire on what they wrote. Maybe in the future, I would like to write more about social-political topics, because it helps you to increase your vocabulary and to develop the way you express yourself in “formal topics” like the subject of Blog 9. Besides, I think it helps me to talk about these topics according with my journalism career, because I would like to work abroad. I would say that writings these ...

I believe that Chilean education has different and numerous challenges for the near future. In my opinion, one of the biggest challenges is to provide a free and quality education for everyone. An education that doesn’t discriminates people by their social or economic status. The government must recognize education as a right and needs to stop seeing as a business. By the other hand, there’s another challenge that is related to this year’s social-politics movement around the world. The feminist movement has been a really strong movement, where women declaim for their rights. This moved to the education area and mixed the fight of women and students into a non-sexist education, where children can learn without getting the focus on gender roles. Definitely, education in our country has a long way to go. But mostly, I think that we, as a society needs to start seeing education as a right that everyone must have, because that’s is the only way that the government and the wor...

This semester I had a lot of subjects that I really like and enjoy, but I think that “Imagen y Sociedad” is the one that I like the most. “Imagen y Sociedad” is a subject that studies the role of images as a message transmitter and how society gives them different meanings depending on certain time and cultures beliefs. One of the reasons I like this subject is because in our times and as a generation, we are part of a visual culture where everything we say or think it has to have an image to represent it. Actually, more than a 70% of the information that we receive in one day is delivered through our vision. So, I’m into this topic, because of the power and impact that images have in our life. Over the course of the semester, we have been studying different types of images, as religious, iconic, symbolic, and more. To evaluate this course, we have weekly activities where we have to apply all the contents we had seen in class, and also, we do little essays and p...

One website that I really like is CIPER Chile, that is well-known famous by his journalistic investigations, but it also has news and opinion articles. CIPER Chile, abbreviation for Centro de Investigación Periodistica, is a non-profit foundation created in 2009 with the purpose of promote investigative journalism. It only has an online platform that contains different sections like: current affairs, investigations, opinion and more. I don’t really visit this website with frequency, but I had read a lot of their investigative work and they are truly great. I admire the journalist that work for this page and the work every employee does to keep this website running with the capability of being loyal to their values and mission. The last one I have read is one about the case of Margarita Ancacoy. It talks about how the cleaning jobs that women, and sometimes men, do, it’s really dangerous, badly paid and also, about how the employees are vulnerable as much in their work...

As much people I have seen a lot of movies and I can never pick a favorite one, but I think that one movie that I really like is 10 things I hate about you directed by Gil Junger. Yeah, I know it’s a romantic comedy but It’s one of those films that I could watch a hundred times without getting bored. The movie is about the love story between Kat (Julia Stiles) and Patrick (Heath Ledger), who are set up by Cameron (Joseph Gordon Levitt), the new high school kid who’s in love with Kat’s sister, Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), a sophomore girl that according to his father rules, can date only if Kat’s dating. My favorite part of the movie is when Patrick sings to Kat “Can’t take my eyes of you”, at the school stadium in front of Kat’s team mates. He makes a whole performance with the school’s band, and of course, without school’s permission, so then two police men comes to catch him but he funly runaway. It’s really sappy, but I love it. Here’s the scene I choose: https://www...

I don’t use to watch lots of cartoons right now, I mean sometimes I watch Rick and Morty or The Simpsons, but I can see that we had all agreed that it is very sexist, racist, homophobic and more. However, when I was little I loved to watch cartoons such as Hey Arnold, Dora, the Explorer, The Rugrats, The Powerpuff Girls and more, and by remembering and writing this, I can tell that mostly of their female characters were strong and empowered women that didn’t follow the stereotype imposed by our society. A good example is The Powerpuff Girls, because it combines the entertainment of children with their education in feminism. (WHICH IS A LOT) Despite this, cartoons that are address to older audiences, -that we could think that are more conscious about certain topics- such as Family Guy, The Simpsons, The Cleveland Show and South Park have explicit reference to gender violence, racism and different types of discrimination. Ps: The GIF is not a critique (to the show), is a...

He’s Jaime and he’s 76 years old. Jaime is my grandfather and he’s been fighting with life. My grandfather suffers from senile dementia but there he is, playing dominos with me and my brother. I remember it was summer and we were visiting my grandparents with my family, and we decided to play some games to change his routine a little bit. My grandfather liked all kind of board games, but with his illness he decided to leave the games. So, when someone asked him to play he said no, that he doesn’t remember how to play anymore. But that day, we convinced with my brother and he was so happy, he even pushed us to play faster! So, I decided to take him that photo, because he seems like he was back in the game, he was really enjoying it. By the way, he DOES remember how to play, he won all the games we played!
